Phone storage full on Android? What to delete first

Updated 2026-10-30 · by Kishore Geddam, Digitocity

To free up space on an Android phone, start with what is biggest and safest to remove: large videos you no longer need, duplicate and blurry photos, old WhatsApp media, and files in Downloads. Check Settings › Storage to see what uses the most space, move anything you want to keep to Google Photos or a computer, then remove the rest. Files moved to your phone's Trash can usually be restored for 30 days.

Step by step

  1. See what is using spaceOpen Settings › Storage (or Settings › Battery and device care › Storage on Samsung). Images, Videos and Apps are usually the biggest.
  2. Remove big videos firstA single long video can be over 1 GB. Delete recordings you don't need, or keep a smaller copy. In FreeGB, Large videos lists them biggest first.
  3. Clear duplicate and blurry photosThe same photo is often saved by Camera, WhatsApp and Downloads. Keep the best copy and remove the rest. FreeGB groups duplicates and suggests which one to keep.
  4. Clean WhatsApp mediaOpen WhatsApp › Settings › Storage and data › Manage storage to review large and forwarded files, or use FreeGB's Chats section.
  5. Empty Downloads and clear app cacheOld PDFs, APKs and videos in Downloads add up. In Settings › Apps, open a heavy app and tap Clear cache (not Clear data).
  6. Empty the Trash when you're sureRemoved files stay in your phone's Trash for 30 days and still use space. Empty it once you've checked nothing important is there.

Questions

What should I delete when my phone storage is full?

Start with large videos, duplicate photos, old WhatsApp forwards and files in Downloads. These are usually the biggest and the least missed. Avoid clearing app data, which signs you out and removes app settings.

Does clearing cache delete my photos?

No. Clearing an app's cache removes temporary files the app can rebuild. It doesn't delete your photos, chats or accounts. Clearing app data is different and resets the app.

Why is my storage still full after deleting photos?

Deleted photos usually go to the Trash first and keep using space for 30 days. Empty the Trash in your gallery app (or in FreeGB) to get the space back.
