How to find and delete duplicate photos on Android
Updated 2026-10-30 · by Kishore Geddam, Digitocity
Android doesn't remove duplicate photos by itself. Use a duplicate photo finder that compares the pictures themselves, not just file names, so it also catches copies saved by WhatsApp, Telegram and Downloads. Review each group, keep the sharpest full-size copy, and move the others to Trash so you can restore them within 30 days if needed.
Step by step
- Install a duplicate finder that runs on your phoneFreeGB compares photos on the phone itself; nothing is uploaded.
- Let it scan your photosIt groups exact copies (the same photo saved twice) and look-alikes (similar shots taken seconds apart).
- Review each groupThe suggested copy to keep is the full-size original, usually from your camera. Compare side by side if you're unsure.
- Select the extras and move them to TrashNothing is pre-selected except exact copies, and you confirm before anything is removed.
- Empty the Trash to get the space backRemoved photos can be restored for 30 days; emptying the Trash frees the space straight away.
Questions
Does Google Photos delete duplicates?
Google Photos skips uploading exact duplicates to your account, but it doesn't remove duplicate files stored on your phone. Those still use phone storage until you delete them.
Why do I have so many duplicate photos?
WhatsApp, Telegram and browsers save their own copy of every photo you receive or download. Photos you forward or re-save create more copies in different folders.
What is the difference between duplicate and similar photos?
Duplicates are the same picture saved more than once, sometimes at a smaller size. Similar photos are different shots of the same moment, like a burst. You usually keep one of each group.
