To clear WhatsApp storage without losing chats, delete media rather than chats. In WhatsApp go to Settings › Storage and data › Manage storage, review files larger than 5 MB and files forwarded many times, and delete what you don't need. Turning off media auto-download in the same menu stops it filling up again. Your messages stay unless you delete the chat itself.
Step by step
- Open WhatsApp's storage managerWhatsApp › Settings › Storage and data › Manage storage.
- Review large and forwarded filesStart with "Larger than 5 MB" and "Forwarded many times". These free the most space for the least effort.
- Clean chat by chatThe list of chats is sorted by size. Open a busy group and remove old videos and photos.
- Find copies saved elsewhereThe same WhatsApp photo is often also saved in your gallery or Downloads. A media cleaner like FreeGB finds those copies and old forwards across folders.
- Turn off auto-downloadSettings › Storage and data › Media auto-download: choose No media for mobile data, or Wi-Fi only.
Questions
Will deleting WhatsApp media delete my messages?
No. Deleting photos and videos removes the files only. Your messages stay unless you delete or clear the chat itself.
Where does WhatsApp save photos on Android?
On Android 11 and later, in Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media, in folders like WhatsApp Images and WhatsApp Video. Files you send are in a Sent subfolder.
What are WhatsApp Status files?
Statuses you view are cached in a hidden .Statuses folder and removed by WhatsApp after about a day. FreeGB can show what is in there.
