Google account storage full? How to free up space in Gmail, Photos and Drive
Updated 2026-10-30 · by Kishore Geddam, Digitocity
Google gives every account 15 GB shared by Gmail, Google Photos and Google Drive; when it's full, Gmail can stop receiving email. Open one.google.com/storage/management to see what uses the space and use Clean up space. In Gmail, search larger:10M to find big attachments and category:promotions older_than:1y for old offers, delete them, then empty Trash and Spam.

Questions
What happens when Google storage is full?
Gmail can stop sending and receiving email, new photos stop backing up to Google Photos, and you can't add files to Drive until you free up space or buy more.
Does deleting photos from my phone free Google storage?
Only if they were backed up and you delete them from Google Photos too. Phone storage and Google storage are separate.
Can an app clean Gmail for me?
Some apps can, after you sign in with Google. FreeGB's Gmail cleaner is coming soon; it will read only sender, subject, size and date, never your email text, and you'll confirm everything it moves to Trash.
